Who’s the best – year end boxing analysis

At the end of the year we found it appropriate to list who we, at the Glass Jaw Reporter rank as the best fighters and fight moments of 2014.

We will start with Best Punch. And what Punch better than the punch that did this damage to Chris Algieri’s eye. It was a monster shot delivered by a serious power puncher. You know it, Ruslan Provodnikov. For the year 2014 I am giving the Siberian Rocky Punch of the year. Oh, ya and by the way I’d love to see Ruslan Provodnikov fight Marcos Madina in 2015.

We will follow up best punch with the best knock out of the year. And we will give that to the Heavy Weight Champ, Wladimir Klitschko who knocked out Kurbrat Pulev, this was a great show put on by the big man in red. This was an overdue knockout by an aging fighter, he showed he still has it, and still has the power. Best Knockout – Wladimir Klitschko.

Best Fight of the year in our book goes to Sergey Kovalev and Bernard Hopkins. This was a great fight Bernard Hopkins age 49, did you read that right, yes, 49 took on a monster in Sergey Kovalev. In 2011 Kovalev fought Roman Simakov, in the seventh round the fight was stopped, Simakov was taken to the hospital, slipped into a coma and died three days later. And if you are a boxing fan you know that Kovalev has the nick name the Krusher for a reason. He knocks out just about everyone he fights. And in the championship rounds of this fight he was pounding on Hopkins and you could tell he was going for the knockout, well Hopkins stood firm and did NOT get knocked out. Kovalev also showed he can box as well as slug, it showed a different dimension to Kovalev’s boxing skill and the Heart of an old Champion in Hopkins. Congratulations Guys on fight of the year. Kovalev Vs. Hopkins.

Most disappointing fight of the year had to come against Timothy Bradley this year. And it was not disappointing effort in fighting but in judging. Bradley handily defeated Diego Chaves.  And a split decesion was a crime, Julie Lederman should be banned from judging, I mean what was she thinking, I scored the fight 118-110 Bradley, ESPN.com had it 119-109 Bradley, and HBO unofficial judge Harold Lederman had it 116-112 for Bradley. It is irritating to watch a boxer put out the performance Bradley did and lose the fight, maybe it was just boxing evening the score for the for the 1st Pacquiao fight he clearly lost. Boxing eventually evens the score…..

Come back of the year goes to Manny Pacquiao, who won twice this year and showed he is still at the top of the fight game.

Trainer of the year Abel Sanchez. – Just look at what he has done with Gennady Golovkin.

Fighter of the year, which is our final category of the year. Goes to……. Gennady Golovkin. With a 90% Knockout percentage he holds the highest Knockout ratio is middle weight history. He won three fight by knockout in 2014 and knocked out his  18th straight victim / opponent. The fight I want to see this year, is not Cotto VS. Golovkin, its Golovkin Vs. Ward.

Happy New Year from the Glass Jaw Reporter.
