Floyd Mayweather / Manny Pacquiao
The elephant in every room, where boxing is discussed is the potential fight between Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather. I read all the articles that blame Floyd and all the articles that blame Manny. But at the end of the day, both these fighters have enough money and power to make this happen. If they want. Will they both be great if they never fight, yes. Floyd is a champion. There is no doubt about that, so is Manny.
Boxing is frustrating, disappointing, maddening, amazing, exciting, all at the same time, that is why we keep coming back. Because we have to know if Floyd, Manny, Tyson, or any other boxer still has it, and sometimes they shock us and do still have it. Perfect examples would be Foreman and Hopkins. They blow our minds and make the impossible, possible. That’s why we watch Maidana fight Mayweather, because there is a chance that one punch will change everything, and it’s possible it can happen, not likely but it’s there. We have seen it time and time again.
Do I want Floyd to beat Manny, yes I’d love to see him win and be labeled as one of the greatest fighters of all time. But I love winners and champions. Just like I love Kirk Douglas in the Champion. One of the greatest boxing movies of all time. He was a bad guy. He was a fighter, in the westerns he would have worn a black hat. But he was a Champion and he died that way. Like a Spartan Soldier. I love the New York Yankee’s because they are Champions, I love Michael Jordan because he was the best.
I love underdogs with the same passion that I love Champions. It’s the reason I wanted to see the Royals beat the Giants in the World Series. It is the reason I loved seeing Ohio beat Alabama in the College Football final four last night. So yes, I also want Manny to knock Floyd to the ground, and I want Floyd to struggle to his feet and get knocked down again.
This this is a fight that makes boxing, boxing. But if it doesn’t happen that is also the curious, strange, dissappointing, exciting, world of Boxing. I’m hooked, with or without Manny and Floyd. I love the sweat, blood, brutal knockouts, bad judging, missed points, the hype, the drama, and all the inbetweens. And if this fight doesn’t happen, boxing it’s self will write the wrong somewhere in the future.
