Boxing Future

It has been a while since we wrote, here at Glass Jaw, just taking sometime to reflect on the current state of Boxing. This weekend we will see Gennady Golovkin face off against Martin Murray. I don’t believe the fight will be all that impressive. My prediction is that Golovkin will win by knockout in the third round. I will watch it and am excited for it, but don’t believe it will be a huge challenge for Golovkin.

Golovkin is one of the boxers with the brightest futures in boxing. I would love to see him face off against Ward, we will see if that happens, but I truly believe that Golovkin will fight anyone he can, and when he does, the odds are painstakingly against his opponent.

When I think of the future of boxing it does not include Floyd Mayweather,  Wladimir Klitschko, or Manny Pacquiao, it includes names like Golovkin, Wilder, Ward, Kovalev, Bradley, Alvarez. These fighters are all young enough to make a name for themselves and be the stand out performers that will take the place of the aging superstar fighters.  And there is a good group of them, even more so than what I listed. I believe there are more great fighters on the verge of emerging than there have been in the last 20 years. Boxing is turning a cusp, and producing great, exciting fighters. Now will the fight? Or have we entered the age of the promoter? More focused on money and keeping belts than on making great fights. The time to make great fights is NOW! I am tired of advisers / promoters like Al Haymon. He’s not interested in making great fights for boxing fans, he’s interested in making money off over built up fights that ultimately disappoint….. Please don’t insult my intelligence and tell me that Robert Guerrero vs. Floyd Mayweather is a great fight, its a bum fight. And we all pay to watch it. Don’t tell me that Marcos Maidana vs. Floyd Mayweather is a great fight, its a bum fight, and twice, makes me sick. A good fight would be Maidana vs. Provodnikov, or Maidana vs. Guerrero, a great fight would be Mayweather vs. Pacquiao, ha ha, I just through that in there, but seriously it would be a great fight and great for boxing. The future of boxing depends on great fights being made. SO lets make some great fights.

The fans fill the seats, the fans buy the paper views, the fans by the network subscriptions, so give the fans what they want. Here’s what I want brutal knockouts, bloody fights, the best vs. the best. Pound for Pound vs. Pound for Pound. The high paid salaries and fight contracts are only there because of the fans, so instead of doing what Al “protect your Ring, WBO, WBC WB.. blah blah blah championship” Haymon says, do what the fans are begging you for!

Here’s to 2015 – Here’s to change – Here’s to Golovkin, Wilder, Ward, Kovalev, Bradley, Alvarez and all the other great fighters coming up through the ranks of professional boxing!
